On Thanksgiving Day we were responsible for providing the dirty rice dressing
for our dinner. We use the Zatarain's family size Dirty Rice Mix. It is an easy peasy
way to make the original South Louisiana dish of rice, spices and ground meat.
My parents and grandparents always used chicken gizzards and livers when
they made it from scratch. The gizzards and the livers gave it a brown, "dirty"
color. My mother-in-law taught us to improvise the recipe by adding
a pound of breakfast sausage to the mix. It adds extra flavor to the mix.
Here is the recipe that can be found on the back of the box.
1 pkg. Rice Mix
1 lb. ground beef
1 tbsp vegetable oil or olive oil (optional) (we do not add oil)
2 ½ cups water
1 lb. ground beef
1 tbsp vegetable oil or olive oil (optional) (we do not add oil)
2 ½ cups water
Add 1 lb. cooked ground beef to complete your meal. (we also add 1 lb. of breakfast sausage)
STOVE TOP DIRECTIONS
1. BROWN 1 lb. ground beef in 3-quart saucepan. Drain fat.
2. STIR 2 ½ cups water, Rice Mix and 1 tbsp. vegetable or olive oil (optional) into saucepan until well blended.
3. SIMMER 25 minutes or until rice is tender.
4. REMOVE from heat. Let stand 5 minutes. Fluff with fork before serving.

It is good enough to be used as your meal.
