A Dose of Reality

Over the weekend, the hubs and I went to Home Depot for a couple of items.  Mostly of the garden nature.  After we were finished, we went into the main store to see if there was anything else we needed before heading home.  I walked in expecting to see their Halloween/Christmas decorations displayed.  I wasn't looking for them...just expected to see them.  Imagine my surprise when I saw rows and rows of supplies needed by those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.  Lives that were turned upside down and inside out.

I don't live in a bubble and I am fully aware of the impact Hurricane Harvey made on our city.  Don't forget the hubs is a commercial adjuster and he has been crazy busy for weeks now.  Probably will be thru the end of the year.

We have friends who were impacted by Hurricane Harvey as well.  It's real.  

We passed by the display of Moisture Meters and the hubs was blown away by how many they had in stock.  He said they usually only carry a few.

The impact of Hurricane Harvey will continue to be felt for a very long time.  We have families coming to CHH (Christian Helping Hands) that are in great need of supplies.  Many left with only the clothes on their backs and are living in hotels until permanent housing can be found.  Children lost their school supplies among so many other things.  Thanks to the many, many donations we have received from across our great United States we are able to provide much needed supplies to those in need.

I want to thank everyone for their many donations.  Our hearts runneth over because of your generosity.  As Robbie, the Director of CHH, reminds us often "we are all God's children".

Aftermath of Hurricane Harvey

The week after Hurricane Harvey landed in Texas the hubs had to make a road trip to Corpus Christi, TX to handle claims for work.  He is a commercial adjuster and you can imagine how many businesses incurred damage from Hurricane Harvey.

I went along to keep him company during the drive there and back.  I also assist by reading his emails and texts to him as he drives.  Helps him stay focused on the road.

Once we arrived in Corpus Christi I set up my "blogging space" in the lobby of the hotel.  As you can see it was really nice.

There was a full coffee and tea bar just feet away.

I was set up in a space similar to the one in the foreground.  It was so comfy.  I did a little people watching, too.  Later I told the hubs I could blog from anywhere in the world....hint hint.  He laughed.   Like he cares, right?  :)

The damage Harvey left behind was much different than the damage we had in the surrounding areas of Houston and the city of Houston.  While our damage was mostly flooding, theirs was downed trees and power lines, roofs missing and some buildings totally demolished.

They experienced a lot of power outages.  There were crews all over replacing poles and repairing downed lines.

This pic was taken one week after Hurricane Harvey passed through and all of the downed trees were dead.

The city of Refugio was hit pretty hard.

You can see some of the debris hanging from the power lines.

We saw HEB was serving hot meals in Refugio.  I wasn't able to snap a pic because I didn't see it until it was too late.

A funny story.  That evening the hubs was talking to one of his buddies Kurt and I was adding commentary in the background (not me!).  Kurt could hear someone talking in the background so he asked him "who's in your room?"  It was so funny.  The hubs usually goes alone so Kurt thought he had "someone" in his room.  We are still laughing about that.  :)

A Meterologist's Perspective on Hurricane Harvey

He is spot on when he speaks about the sound of rain....

"I honestly think I’m not going to be able to sleep now when it’s raining. There’s no rain gentle enough that will allow me to drift off to sleep in peace. Why? Because it will make me worried. Worried for myself and my family? Maybe a little. But worried for Houstonians. For people who have been through this once or twice or even three times. And I know so many in this city will never be able to experience the soothing, relaxing, gentle sound of rain again either. And it saddens me. Maybe that “fear” of rain will disappear with time for Houstonians and myself too."

I am sure you are aware of Hurricane Irma.  Irma is a Category 5 with winds of 180 mph.  Please keep everyone in Irma's projected path in your prayers.
